P1000879At the end of January, the Wells Cathedral School Under 16 Netball Team took part in the South West Netball Tournament at Bournemouth, representing Somerset, as a result of their win earlier in the season in the Somerset County Tournament.

Following a tough pool, where the team played strenuously fought matches against county teams from Wiltshire, Bristol, Cornwall, Dorset and Gloucester, the Somerset County Champions remained unbeaten and proceeded into the semi-finals top of their group.

There they came up against an outstanding team, Dean Close, who narrowly beat them to go through to the finals, which the Dean Close team eventually won. In all, the Somerset girls came an impressive third in the regional tournament, narrowly missing out on qualification for the national finals.

Head of Girls’ Games, Gemma Pritchard said, “The girls played tremendously well and were unlucky not to get to the finals. We’re very proud of their efforts and dedication.”

All nine members of the netball squad are local girls, Kate Ballan-Whitfield from Henton, Captain Annie Campbell-Orde from North Wooton, Nancy Lunnon and Lucinda Manning from Wells, Rosie Malone from Shepton Mallet, Kaiya Kim-Saville from Lottisham, twins Emily and Isabella Smith from Wraxall and Emily Toulson Clarke from Frome.

They are pictured with coaches Gemma Pritchard and Bonnie Anderson.
