You must be at least 16 years of age on the first day of the course and be able to meet the following criteria:

• Jump/dive into deep water
• Swim 50 metres in less than 60 seconds
• Swim 100 metres continuously on front and back
• In deep water, tread water for at least 30 seconds
• Surface dive to the floor of the pool
• Climb out unaided without ladder/steps

The qualification consists of two units:

• Unit 1 - The Principles of Lifesaving and Swimming Pool Supervision.
Covers the general aspects of pool lifeguarding including pool operation, supervision, accident prevention and rescue skills (including timed swim rescues of conscious and unconscious casualties) as well as cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid.

• Unit 2 - The Application of Supervision and Rescue in a Swimming Pool.
Unit 2 puts the skills and knowledge learnt in Unit 1 into practice and determines your ability to apply these in a work related environment as they would apply in a swimming pool.

The NPLQ is awarded on the successful completion of both units. The NPLQ is widely recognised as the professional benchmark in the leisure industry and will provide you with the opportunity for employment at most UK swimming pools. The qualification also has widespread international recognition.

Candidates will have full and exclusive use of a 25 metre heated and covered pool
