Friends of Music The Friends of Music at Wells Cathedral School was created to support and raise funds for the talented and enthusiastic young people who study and play music at the school. Many of them go on to highly successful careers in the world of music, and they benefit enormously from the support provided by the generous and interested audience of Friends. Although the Friends of Music works very closely with the school, it is run independently by a management committee elected from among the Friends’ members. The benefits of being a Friend Each year the school organises a series of Prestige Concerts featuring its finest young musicians in orchestras, bands and choirs, often performing with guest conductors and soloists. The programme for these concerts is available in September and Friends benefit from a two-week priority booking period and concessionary rates on the ticket prices. For concerts in the Cathedral, Friends are also provided with cushions to make the occasion more comfortable! Friends are kept updated through a biannual magazine which is posted to them giving an insight into the activities and people in the music department. They also receive other school magazines and termly concert diaries listing the regular free lunchtime and evening concerts which take place in the school’s mediaeval concert hall and elsewhere. Friends are invited to attend masterclasses, thus enhancing their own musical education through watching notable performers working with the school’s gifted young musicians. Events of a more social nature also feature in the annual calendar, often combined with performances by soloists and ensembles from the school. Financial support for music at Wells After minimal administrative expenses, all income is gifted to the school to fund new instruments, music, and concert tours abroad. In recent years the Friends have raised money for a wide range of items, from a new Steinway concert grand piano to financial support for the Chamber Orchestra tour of China and Hong Kong. Annual subscriptions are £15.00 (single membership) or £22.50 (joint membership). The application form can be downloaded here:friends_application_form_july_2009
