outreach.jpgMusic Outreach at Wells Cathedral School is now in its fifth year and blossoming as each year goes by. The department with its characteristic Play Well Play Wells logo is now to be seen in schools, care homes and many venues around Wells and beyond. The brief of the department is to take what we do musically within the school into the community, sharing our music making with others.

Major projects include -

  • Piano Club, which meets once a month to share a mutual love of the piano;
  • Work in local Primary Schools to support the National Curriculum and to give support to non specialist teachers;
  • Work with the elderly, taking students into local care homes to sing and play instruments;
  • Wind Café, which gives children from local schools the chance to meet and play together in a friendly and supportive environment. They then have the option of moving on to Youth Orchestra to play with Wells students.

Many WCS students move to courses at Conservatoires or Music colleges. Now more than ever they are expected to be "portfolio musicians" who have many different strands to their musical career. Most will encounter outreach work at some point in their professional lives and having experienced it whilst still at school gives them an advantage that opens up another avenue for their music making.
