Spotlight on Wells in Hong Kong

Small for websiteHuge thanks to former students Sharon Chan, Rita Lam, Cyrus Cheng, Vivian Yau and Honor Whiteley, all recent music specialists and Hong Kong residents, who held a concert in aid of the Wells Music Society of Hong Kong Scholars Scheme on 22nd July, to a large and appreciative audience.

We were delighted that this exceptional group of Old Wellensians, some of whom were Hong Kong scholars themselves, got in touch to offer this fundraising concert, which we were able to support. It was a wonderful occasion, with breath-taking mucial performances - and with the promise of another return concert next summer!

Choralia tour a triumph!

Choralia 1Choralia, Wells' upper voices choir who launched their first international CD on the Naxos label last May, delivered a Christmas Special tour to Hong Kong in December 2015.

As guests of the Wells Music Society of Hong Kong, the choir, accompanied by Wells' specialist pianist and harpist, Kirsty Chaplin, gave performances in schools in Macau and Kowloon Tong, including Wells' partner school, Alliance Primary School. A large number of the Alliance Primary parents joined the concert and prepared a wonderful lunch for Wells' students and staff; they recalled with great affection the visit their children made to Wells in summer 2014.

Choralia also performed in the City Plaza and Pacific Place shopping malls, on radio and TV broadcasts (click here to watch Choralia sing on XXTV) , in a joint concert at the Academy for the Performing Arts, with APA students Xinai Ruan, Chun Yiu Alexander Chen and Xiyuan Zhen, and gave a private recital at the renowned Hong Kong Club.

The crowning glory was a magnificent concert at City Hall, where Choralia performed Karl Jenkins' Adiemus with the Hong Kong City Chamber Orchestra and Britten's Ceremony of Carols, accompanied by Kirsty Chaplin on the harp, with not one but two encores!

Boy band takes Hong Kong by storm

Ferio drums for webOur Senior Percussion Ensemble, Ferio (the closest thing to Wells' first boy band) visited Hong Kong during the Easter break. The schedule was a busy one, including a visit to Alliance Primary school as part of their 60th anniversary celebrations, a wonderful concert at the Academy for Performing Arts and a "game changing" outreach day for the students at Sarah Roe school, working with hearing impaired and disabled children. During the last few years the students have become quite familiar with working with hearing impaired students and have developed an extensive range of activities and repertoire.

We were delighted that Honor Whiteley and Cyrus Cheng were able to join us for the APA concert - performed to a packed audience and a wonderful celebration of our HK charity, the Wells Music Society of Hong Kong.

"I am delighted to be visiting Hong Kong to give my Asia debut appearance. I have only once ever visited Hong Kong, back in 1991 as a young chorister with St John's College Choir from Cambridge. It's good to return with my new voice!

"Die Konzertisten have generously provided the opportunity to perform here and I come to Hong Kong also as an ambassador for the Wells Music Society of Hong Kong, a local charity dedicated to enhancing the musical life of Hong Kong through its talented young musicians. The Society is linked to my old school in England, Wells Cathedral School, and so the connection feels very personal."
